今回は日本語の発想にも通じる、uphill の比喩的な使い方を見てみましょう。
uphill
前途多難な
hill は「丘」ですが、これを
up 「のぼる」のはつらいですよね。
このことから uphill には「前途多難な、困難な」という意味があるのです。
uphill battle 厳しい闘い、苦戦
同じ意味で
uphill struggle
uphill fight
なども使えそうです。
では、逆に downhill はどうでしょうか？
丘を下りてゆく、転がり落ちてゆく、ということから
downhill 悪化して、落ちぶれて
などの意味がしっかりあるのです。
go downhill 悪化する
roll downhill 坂を転がり落ちる
The actor's popularity went downhill after the scandal.
その俳優の人気は、スキャンダルのあと急落した。

この記事は Forbes Japan の記事をベースに書かれていますが、記事によれば日本のリサイクル率84%のうち56%は「ゴミを燃やして発電タービンを回す」ことでリサイクルしていると定義しているそうです。
回収したゴミで新たな製品を作るのが「リサイクル」というわけではないようです。
