大阪出身の私も、かれこれ20年以上年末に帰省しています。
exodus
人の大移動
この exodus ですが、もともとは宗教的な由来があるのです。
旧約聖書にある「出エジプト」を the Exodus ということから、
人の大量移動・脱出 をさす例えとして使われています。
記事から英語を拾ってみましょう。

私も息子と新幹線で品川から京都まで帰省しましたが、滋賀県の雪の影響で新幹線の出発が40分ほど遅れました。
その間、人々がどんどん駅コンコースにあふれて結構大変な状況でした。
帰省客の多さを思い知りました。
