先日から盛んに新種のコロナ変異株のニュースが流れています。
南アフリカを中心とするコレ。

オミクロン
ご存じの通り、omicron というのはギリシア文字の15番目なのですが、その前の変異株は12番目の mu「ミュー」でした。
13番目の nu「ニュー」と14番目の xi「クシー」 がスキップされているのです。

WHOの説明では、nu は英語の new と混同しやすく、xi は姓として使われるため、感染症に名前をつけるときに地名や人名を疾患名に使わないというポリシーに反するとのことです。
